I had one similar. There was a collection bottle under the grill.

Call JennAir!! I lucked out and was able to buy new flat top burners to replace the faded ones that were here when we bought our house. If it is a modular unit, you can possibly replace the grill with flat top burners. Mine has the same grill, but with two burners sets also. I did not need 6 burners so I just use the grill as a hot plate- perfect for when I take hot dishes out of the oven across from it! Seriously though, try to find your model number and call Jenn Air- I wish you luck

I did the same thing.!!! I also sometimes when needed, would heat up vegetables if I needed one more heat source! Oh how I miss it! I loved cooking burgers in the winter!!!

  • Judy Roberts Judy Roberts on Dec 22, 2016

There is a mason jar attached underneath for drippings. That entire section is removable. You could add two more burners in it's place.

I had the same situation on a Jennair and decided I needed the 4 cooking eyes more so I ordered another side with two eyes on it and did away with using the grill. I now have 4 cooking eyes, two large, two small. Like it bunches.

We had a Jenn Aire like this for almost 30 years......great stove, but the grill is a mess to use. We probably didn't use it more than a half dozen times. We did have the extra two burners, which we used instead of the grill.

  • Sharon Sharon on Dec 22, 2016

I also have a JennAir stove - Seldom use the grill but have the griddle! Use the griddle occasionally, but use the extra two burner attachment all the time!! Prefer to use the outdoor Bar_B_Que for grilling.

    Go on-line for JennAir https://jennair.com/customer-care/contact-us

You will need the model number probably, but they can hook you up with ways of dealing with this. I always go straight to the source with appliances that I am unfamiliar with.

In your picture there are two eyes on the left, most stoves have four eyes, and some a five. They are the circle of heat on which you put a pot or pan. We ordered a panel like the one on your left and took off the grill and put the other one on it. Jennair has options to do this. Some come with left and right having two eyes each. You have a choice of options and they are easy to change.

It''s for grilling meat and veggies. Use it same as a BBQ

The heat of elements is so hot it burns mess off. Kind of like a self cleaning oven does. Once they cool off you can wipe element off with damp rag.

As stated before, you can order a griddle for it. I use mine frequently for pancakes, hot sandwiches, any number of things.

I've a Jenn-Aire with 3 sections. The grill is in the middle. Used it last night... for hotdogs! :)

I use aluminum foil on mine....less mess, easy clean up. I like that the whole thing breaks down for easy cleaning!

  • MH MH on Dec 24, 2016

for sure love the ease of using foil as welll

Many years ago I had a Jenn-Aire just like your picture. I loved it When the grill got dirty I ran all the non-electric parts through the dishwasher with no problem.

In Australia most stoves have a minimum of 4 burners ( 2 large and 2 small) they also have a separate griller under the hotplates and above the oven this is the norm for free standing stoves ( if its a underbench oven the separate griller is above the oven and the hotplates are a separate unit to the oven so that you can place it into the benchtop ) my grill gets used all the time for cooking steak sausages etc as well as grilling cheese on toast ( aluminum foil is placed on top of the rack to stop cheese falling into the tray) the element is in the top.of the grill so its great for browning anything.

This is what we use on ours:

    https://www.amazon.com/Aoocan-Grill-100-Non-stick-Baking/dp/B01HXQTNVK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1482683922&sr=8-2&keywords=heat+pad+for+barbeque+grill

We've been using this for a couple of years and have had great luck with it. Saves a lot of cleanup mess on the grill, but the sauces can sometimes burn on it and you might need to use a good bit of elbow grease to remove it...nevertheless, it is far preferable to cleaning the grill itself.

My Jenn-Air is very similar to the one in your picture. Remove the grill and accessories (stone-like pieces with handles) and you should find a small hole in the bottom of the pan at the front of your stove. That hole is the drain for any excess juices, sauces, etc. It drains all the way to the bottom of the stove on the underside where there should be a pint-sized Mason-like jar to catch the drippings. There's a screw-on plastic-rubbery lid with a handle and a hole in the middle to direct the drippings into the jar. My stove was new 20 years ago and came with two of these jars. It's kind of like the bacon grease jar that many cooks used at one time. I just remove the jar after using the grill and replace with the clean one. The jars slide out and back in, BTW.

    Hope this helps!

Note: I've never used the grill side much, since the novelty wore off.. Wish I had two more cooking eyes instead. I'll probably go that route with my next stove purchase. As noted above, there are several options. However, I LOVE the downdraft concept and will definitely pursue that again!

Omigosh, thank you!! We've been in our house for 5 years, I never even knew about the grease catcher-!! Removed that front section and wow, the surprises that awaited me But....how does the grill itself get hot? We have an electric, so the 2 glasstops are inserted into the power source. If I just lay the grilltops on the open spot, how do they get heat--am I missing a part???

2 burners are Not enough.... Solution: go to the appliance store and order another set of burners. A set of burners consist of 1 large and 1 small. Remove the grill and insert the burners...problem solved...then when you need or want to grill remove the burners and put in grill. JennAir products are sold in components therefore, you can customize Any way that suits your needs. i always order an extra set of bunerd.

    • JEWEL C JEWEL C on Dec 26, 2016

That was my solution. Also if your burners go out it is a solution to keep from buying a whole new stove. I did that too.

  • Tammy Kelley Tammy Kelley on Dec 26, 2016

If you don't want the grill, buy another cartridge like the one on the left. Coil top ones sell for around 165.00 and solid surface ones sell for around 260. 00.

  • Barbara Eldredge Dolan Barbara Eldredge Dolan on Dec 26, 2016

You might find a burner set at a used appliance store. When we built this house, that is the stove we bought. It came with the second set of burners to swap out with the grill. I loved being able to grill but hated the clean-up so much I eventually boxed up the grill part and stored it.

  • Cathy Chappuis Cathy Chappuis on Dec 26, 2016

I always sprayed the grill with pam or brushed oil on it. I just put it in the dish washer to clean it. Be sure you keep the little jar that's under the unit empty and clean. If it got too full, you would have a mess.

  • Julia Julia on Dec 26, 2016

I've had Jenn Aire since 1974 (2 of them). Put the grills in the dishwasher. Wipe under with a paper towel then use ammonia to get all the grease. Use the same jar that catches the grease as long as you wish and when filled, simply toss and simply screw another Mason jar on. I have 2 glass tops, a grill and I bought the coil type to use with heavy pots when canning. I clean the glass tops with soda after each use. Looks like new after all these years. Good luck.

  • Ska6325059 Ska6325059 on Dec 26, 2016

How for you clean with soda?

    please explain

  • Ska6325059 Ska6325059 on Dec 26, 2016

My electric coil where the grills are also get greezy how do you clean that?

  • Das10218188 Das10218188 on Dec 27, 2016

Yes, I know! There are actually several options with mine. Thanks!

  • Kcama Kcama on Dec 27, 2016

We thought the grill would be a good idea, too, but never used it. Now we have the griddle - great for lots of pancakes, grilled cheese for a crowd, big batch of shrimp. Comes out easily and cleans up in a breeze....but do make sure you have the little jar underneath to catch the overflow.

  • 512181 512181 on Dec 27, 2016

We have a similar Thermador range. I also have the griddle and use it often. I use the grill option to make great quesadillas or hot dogs. Grilling most other meat is too messy, I think. I also line the pan beneath the grill top with foil for easier clean up. If you happen to find a replacement cartridge for 2 more burners, make sure to check the model numbers on the range and the cartridge. I had a JennAir many years ago and borrowed the cartridge from a friend and since they were not compatible, I broke the cartridge and had to order her a new one.

I love my grill but I have 4 burner and put a grill over two of the burner when I need it. Store it in the oven when not in use.

  • Doreene James Doreene James on Dec 27, 2016

I had the same set up. I lined the bottom of the grill with foil and that worked well, mine had fake charcoal in it and I washed them with soap and water, I wish I,d have thought to put them in the dishwasher I'm sure that would have worked better! I didn't like only having 2 burners so I bought replacements on E Bay I think I paid less than $50 and they worked great. I kept the grill in the bottom drawer and switched it when I wanted to grill. Everything is modular and easily removed and replaced.

You can go to jenn air .com and order a replacement module with burners and pop it in and when you want to grill you just switch.

  • Jane R. Jane R. on Dec 27, 2016

I have the same Jenn air cooktop. I have never used the grill or griddle. I'd rather just have two more burners. Although the grill can be used for large pots. I live alone so don't need to cook anything in a very large pot. I still love the cook top since I only cook for one most of the time the two burners are enough. I'll use the grill since I know it can be placed in the dishwasher to clean.

Question: can you use charcoal in these for more even cooking?

  • Cowboy Cowboy on Mar 04, 2021

Surround the elements with lava rocks.. put the rack back on. Turn on high to season for 2 hours. The rocks will make a continuous popping sound.. allow to cool completely. Cook a couple of thick hamburger steaks on it first. Make sure drippings completely cover rocks and season grates. Leave on 45 minutes after each use. This will burn off grease and season rocks. It will also burn excess sauce, etc.. you should never have to clean the grill top, simply wipe it off. The 45 min of unused heat self cleans it. Best stove EVER
