Book Folding Artistry

Book folding is a meticulous art form and each piece takes several hours to complete. Following a specific pattern, I either fold, snip and fold, or a combination of both to achieve the desired look. I can also create either a recessed or an embossed pattern. Basically the options are endless!

I have always been an avid reader and passionate about books. The hardcover books I use are unloved books without a home and are given another chance as a unique piece of art!

There are three techniques primarily used in book folding. First is the "normal or classic fold" which is only folded, no snips. The heart below is a normal fold.

Next is the "snip and fold" or "cut and fold". After I've marked each page with my pattern measurements, I snip anywhere from a 1cm depth to a 3 call me depth creating tabs that I then fold. The geisha is a snip and fold with a 1cm depth.

The snowy cottage below is a snip and fold with a 3cm depth. This creates a completely different look and adds texture because you can see the lettering of the book.

With the snip and fold, an embossed technique can also be done. This allows the pattern to really "pop". Below are inverted snip and folds in 2 different depths.

Another snip and fold technique is the "partial or shadow fold". This is a much more subtle technique that make the pattern look like a shadow within the pages. The lighthouse is an example of this technique.

My favorite technique is the "combination fold" which is where you use both the normal fold and snip and fold in the same book! The pictures below are some of my completed combination folds.

I've started taking the combination fold to a new level by transforming them into functioning clocks.

The versatility with book folding is endless. Patterns can be coloured, books can be recovered with fabric and embellishments added. The options are endless!

Note: all book folding patterns are by Kendall Korda of Creased Chronicles except the purple clock which was created by Joanne Abbott.
