Is Your Family Prepared for a House Fire?

One of my passions is making sure EVERYONE is prepared for a house fire! As humans we tend to think..."That will Never happen to me" But let me share that it CAN and being prepared may save your life. This is my story behind why I am so passionate about fire safety.
I was exhausted, in that deep stage of sleep, I heard a noise I couldn't focus on. It seemed so far away. What was that constant noise? It got louder and louder creeping up on me in a slow steady movement. I awoke to find my dog, Nikki, standing over me barking in my face. I couldn't see her...where was I? What was that smell and that fog... - See more at: http://www.lifeafteremptynest.com/2013/10/the-night-i-lost-everything.html#sthash.bTZI0Tlp.dpuf
Then reality set in...it was SMOKE, as thick as a wall pressing against me. I sat up...my adrenaline started pumping, I'm dreaming...I'm just dreaming... I sat up and felt my way into the hall. As I walked around the corner I could see flames as the heat surrounded me. My kitchen is on fire! I ran back to the bedroom calling 911. "Fire!!..Fire!!" I screamed "My house is on"...the phone went dead as the kitchen was engulfed with flames. - See more at: http://www.lifeafteremptynest.com/2013/10/the-night-i-lost-everything.html#sthash.bTZI0Tlp.dpuf

Do you have a link to information you promised to share in the link above? That would be more helpful. It is something you never think will happen to you so it would be very helpful to share as this time of year seems to bring even more house fires with all the extra Christmas lights causing electrical overloads.

Thank you @Sharon. That is all such good information. Thank you so much for taking the time to share it and help me find the rest of the story. Our Son and six year old Grandson live with us and I never thought about how important it is to have a plan as all our bedrooms are upstairs. Their rooms are both above the walk out basement area so It's a long way down. I fear our grandson would not go down a ladder himself, but also fear "what if" he couldn't make it to his Dad's room or his Dad to him. There's a deck on the first level below one side of our son's room where they could more easily climb down to and then get to the ground from there. We have a sleeping porch off the master with the driveway below so that's our escape. We have four cats that sleep all over the house. I'm wondering if it wouldn't make more sense to close them in fourth bedroom, my drawing room, at night so I'd know where they were. We do have smoke detectors all over our home and basement per code and the batteries are always updated. They are hardwired also. Again, thank you so much for sharing this.
