This holiday season I made about 15 of these oven rack push pull sticks for family and friends. They're extremely easy to make. It only requires a few tools and you can probably make it in about 1/2 to 1 hour. These are great gadgets for your kitchen, and hopefully will help prevent some burned fingers or hands.

Pick a good hardwood, preferably. Although just about any wood will work, I used some reclaimed Mahogany and Hickory. Stay away from treated lumber. You could use red oak which is probably more available and you can find in your local home improvement center.

Do a quick online search and find numerous ideas. I created a really simple design and drew it freehanded onto the wood. I designed it to contour with my hand. For the dimensions that I used, go look at the full tutorial over on my site. The notch of the end is for pushing the oven rack and the one on the bottom is for pulling the oven rack.

Use a saw to cut out the pattern. I used a bandsaw, but use whatever saw you have on hand. A jigsaw would work perfectly also. Keep cuts to the outside of the line. Once you've cut this first stick, it can become the template for more.

Completely sand the stick all the way around. I also sanded and contoured the edges to make it easier to fit in my hand.

Drill a hole for a strap, if you would like to be able to hang the stick somewhere in your kitchen. A 1/4 inch hole will do.

Add a finish of choice. I used Danish Oil. Spray-on lacquer would probably work fine as well.

Finished stick -- this one is Honduran Mahogany. I bought it from a local wood store and the owner said it came from some old furniture.

This one is made from Hickory.

Thanks, and happy crafting!
