Building a Fireplace Mantel After Closing a Tv Niche Above Fireplace.

We closed up our tv niche above the fireplace. We found a used mantel at the ReStore, attached it, then added butcherblock to the mantel shelf. We planked the wall above the mantel and added picture frame and crown molding to finish it off.
We took the doors off.

Why would you close up the space for the TV? Why wouldn't you just create doors to cover it or something or... book shelves, curios,??? Curious.

    • @Rosemary Smart Hey Rosemary, the tv niche had doors. We just never closed them because it was a pain. The reason I moved the tv was so that I could have a mantel. If you have the tv above the fireplace, there's no room for a mantel. I love the look of a decorated mantel.

I love it! We have a fireplace on an end wall like that with a mantle. Years ago when my first husband and I moved into the house we put up Z-brick on the wall. Well, 35 years and second husband later, I was sick of the Z-brick with the black mastic! I recently used latex paint and water to 'white-wash' the whole thing and it looks so much better. Then my husband said he wishes we could put the TV up there! AACCKK! No, No, NO! LOL I kindly said something like," Gee, I really like this look." and I'm hoping he'll forget about his idea. Pray for me. Hehehehe :)
