Art Room Creation

Teresa
by Teresa
We are still building our home and here is what we have done with regard to me having my art room again.
It has been a lot of work and we have done it all ourselves, and I am really, really please with it!
Before...
Drywall up and taped.
Then the faux ceramic floor - my Hometalk post shows how.. http://www.hometalk.com/diy/floors-ceilings/faux-ceramic-tiles-23485032
Then I textured the wall by hand, with joint compound, primed it and painted it.
Then we placed the enhanced book cases where we wanted the. You can also see my post about the book cases... http://www.hometalk.com/diy/living-room/furniture/book-shelf-boost-25731157
Wainscoting panels and window trim went up next
Starting to make the book cases look built in.
Closet sliding door were put on and the wainscot rail was put up - to save some money, we used cheap molding we could get in bulk and layered them.
first coat of paint. We could not do the ceilings until the plumbing for the 2 bathrooms was done, so it stayed like this until we could buy all the fixtures for the bathroom and could get the plumber in..
We could not do the ceilings until the plumbing for the 2 bathrooms was done, so it stayed like this until we could buy all the fixtures for the bathroom and could get the plumber in..
and after what felt like years.. a ceiling!
we decided to angle the area over the bookcase so we would still have the shelf available.
Because the ceilings are 9'6" I decided to have some storage area above the closet, and my hubby made sliding doors..
That I just had to spruce up, I love painting!
We did a faux tin ceiling - but I am out of room and that is another post!
Before and After.

I cannot wait to have my very own art studio without having to move things around. I've collected so much over the years, and as a mixed media artist, I have to have a better organizational job. This is pretty. Good job!

I love this room. I painted my sewing room in two shades of purple and absolutely love it. Haven't had the nerve to paint any of the furniture purple but after seeing this I might try it. Beautiful job.

I have a big room thought it would be good for all of it but then the fabric took over... all else was lost. Now I've been contemplating busting out a wall.
    • Teresa Teresa on Jan 08, 2017
Fabric can do that, I use to sew a lot, but now only sew every now and then, so I don't have a lot of material, just 2 big bins!
  • Sandra Crosbie Sandra Crosbie on Jan 07, 2017
Wow wow and another Wow. I lovers it. I really didn't think looking at the first photos that it would finish looking so beautiful. I'm dying to have a craft room all for myself. Technically I should be able to because we have a three bedroom home, there is only the two of us, one room is a guest room the other has now become the toy/ pushchair / sewing room. I've 5 grandchildren so I always end up having all the Christmas toys they get as gifts here. I think I need to evict the toys, pushchairs back to the rightful owners. Lol. You've inspired and motivated me. That is going to be my goal for this year.
    • Teresa Teresa on Jan 07, 2017
Thank you for your kind words, I am glad I have given you some inspiration! YESS!!! I never thought I would have a room like this and realize how fortunate I am. I got a fake leather storage ottoman and have the toys for our grandkids in there, when it gets full, I send the overflow home! Good luck with getting your room, and post photos when you do!

  • Vicky Myers Vicky Myers on Jan 07, 2017
Why didn't you move the plug in up instead of cutting the Wainscoting?
    • Teresa Teresa on Jan 07, 2017
Well, partly because we could not more the plugs on the non wooden ICF wall and we wanted them all at the same height but, oh, you should see the wonderful job my husband did of goin around the plugs with the wainscoting - he is a master of trim! I will take photos later and come back here and post.. It adds so much!
  • Sam Sam on Jan 07, 2017

Very nice~enjoy it! And ya'll did it all yourselves! And don't listen to people like Brucemerkel, he must have nothing better to do than tear other people's successes apart. Maybe he should learn to DIY?
    • Teresa Teresa on Jan 08, 2017
Thank you. And some people just need to be nasty - usually makes their lives miserable, not mine.. and we love sitting back and seeing what we have accomplished, doing it yourself, is super rewarding!

I love your flipped room. Luscious colors. I really do like the way you incorporated the protruding wall area there between the two windows. I love how you just blended it right in with the new flip. All very nice.

Thank you so much, I have really enjoyed working on it, and am very grateful for a husband who loves to do what I don't love so much (and vice versa). It is really satisfying too look at a room you love and realize " we did this!"

Thanks, and yes, it is girly. Which is funny because I am not a girly girl, always covered in paint, mud, plaster etc.. But last week I told my hubby. I have a girly girl room and he laughed. I love it!

Great makeover. Love the stenciling above the doors and especially love the wanes coating. I had it in my main bathroom. 4 boys and when they bathed, they leaned on a painted wall and we were being more practical with the wanes coating. I had the vertical. They are quite trendy now! Enjoy your new room.
    • Teresa Teresa on Jan 08, 2017
Thank you. we renovated an old home back to original before we moved here, and it has wainscoting and we loved it, so we decide to use the look here too. And I am already enjoying it!
  • Katherine Katherine on Jan 08, 2017
That was ALOT of work and an amazing transformation! Congratulations on a job well-done!
    • Teresa Teresa on Jan 08, 2017

Thank you so much. We are now almost finished the "cafe" room. The sitting room we have made with a Paris theme and a coffee bar/ microwave area. I am having a blast!

  • Ardale Ardale on Jan 08, 2017
Just beautiful, I would kill for a room like that! I know exactly how much work was involved getting there. My husband and I build our 2 story house ourselves from the ground up and did everything except the heating and cooling system and sewer system which we hired out but everything else we did so believe me I know what work is and like you I'm also a girl who doesn't mind getting down and dirty but I also like a pretty girly room too! You guys did a wonderful job and it shows in your attention to detail. Someday I just may convert one of our guest bedrooms into my dream craft/sewing room. We also have and love your wainscoting and have the exact same wainscoting in some of our rooms as well. Your a very talented lady and have a talented husband as well. Thanks for sharing your beautiful room!
    • Teresa Teresa on Jan 08, 2017

Thank you, nic to hear from someone who had also done this! We sound very similar!! It is so much work , but I am loving every second of it. The funny part is the upper floor we did not plainly so what most visitors see is not a pretty. Of course we did that so we would have a place to live.! We will get up there again when the basement (walk out) is finished

  • Candy Walsh Candy Walsh on Jan 08, 2017

  • Sparkles Sparkles on Jan 08, 2017

such a pretty room. love the colors and shelves.

  • Ardale Ardale on Jan 08, 2017

We did ours the opposite way. We finished and lived in our basement a few years while we saved up working two full time jobs and running a business on the side to have the money to build the house upstairs. Boy was that an experience but like you I loved every minute of it except for mudding and sanding the drywall. YUK! I would still do it all over again regardless of all the work but not so sure hubby would. LOL Learned a lot and have what you want in the end not someone else's dream but your own. From the look of your girly room your house is going to be beautiful. And yes I do think you and I are a lot alike.

    • Teresa Teresa on Jan 08, 2017

Ha! I also run 2 businesses- and although I would do this again - hubby says ummmmmm no! So yes, we have a lot in common !

  • Denise Denise on Jan 08, 2017

  • Lisa Wiseman Lisa Wiseman on Jan 14, 2017

This is one of THE most spectacular room transformations I have EVER seen on Hometalk! Wow! I absolutely love the new room. I love the paint color, the little added touches above the closet doors that match some painting done on the furniture which helps tie mismatched furniture together. The storage in this room is every crafter's dream. The big table in the room allows projects-in-progress to be left out, rather than have to be stowed away before finished. I absolutely cannot think of anything that I would want to change! This is a room I could spend many hours crafting and creating in! Well done!

I love it. Wow you two are amazing. Just to have the dream an then see it come together must make you 2 proud. Can you help me I'm under how to arrange furniture in master bedroom. I have no creative gene well I have a little but I hate the work involved I would rather pay. I need overhead lighting and how to blend bedroom furniture with one side of there room for my husband's desk and mine so I can get the creative genes flowing . There are just to many ideas that I love on this site and I can't get motivated in that room. It's 12by20. Just a rectangle. I have moved the heavy bed so often that my husband never knows what he is coming home to and the there is the living room. That's a whole other story. But I want bookcases like yours and color I love color but I want to respect my husband sharing the room. It's neutral now not bad but boring. Please someone out there help. I love that feminine room it's a dream. Enjoy it once your muscles rest. Goodness I wish you were my neighbor. 👍👍👍👍

  • Teresa Teresa on Jan 15, 2017

Could you share a picture of your room? Seeing it gets my ideas flowing. I solved my sons decorating dilemma in their master bedroom by suggesting what I call a mutual colour - feminine but masculine too. A light mint green seems to be a colour men and women find good for bedrooms, and it goes well with grays and white. Then if you have book cases, you can paint the backs with a darker shade of green - same tone - but deeper. Send a photo and I will try to give you more ideas!
