Front Door Refinishing Project

This was a tricky job, because the door is fiberglass and the side panels are wood. All needed to be re-done. I researched how to do it on the website for the door manufacturer. The home owner and I were quite pleased with the result.

Our front door needs a drastic makeover. It is a steel door that was done to look like wood. Would your technique work for my door

Hi-thanks for the question! Check the door manufacturer's website for imstructions on how to paint it. That's how I knew how to ontain the needed materials for the door I did. It may be that a metal primer snd rustoleum paint may be your best bet. Either way, be sure to clean any areas to be painted extremely well. Please post before and after pics!

Do you have directions posted anywhere?

Thanks for asking! No-I don't have instructions posted anywhere. The door is fiberglass, with wood side panels. I researched the instructions for finishing the door from an unfinished state, and adapted them to a finished door that needed refurbishing. I used stripper to manually strip the finish, then hand sanded the entire door and side panels, so it would be uniform in appearance when finished. I had purchased a refinishing kit from the company that made the door, and followed their instructions. It consisted of a base conditioner, stain and sealer. I finished the wood areas with wood stain to match the door stain. The whole project probably took 30-37 hrs.
