Who Say's You Can't Paint Laminate Cabinets?

Bought my 15 year old Villa in April '16. Remodeled entire Villa - Laminate Flooring, porcelain tile, new wood moldings, paint throughout - picked my colors which are always earth tones and when I was finished - those UGLY pink laminate cabinets were throwing the whole look off. I read on DIY of a woman who painted her laminate cabinets successfully using "chalk paint" as a base, two coats of Latex Semi Gloss paint, and two coats of polyurethane. The project took awhile as the secret to success is patience. Allowing each coat to fully dry before the next coat went on. I scrubbed all the cabinets with Totally Awesome Cleaner, lightly sanded the laminate removing surface shine, and started with the Chalk Paint (2 coats)... Tip: Remove the doors by the mounting screws - NOT the hinges, number each door so that in the end they are easily installed and open and close without endless hinge adjustments. Thrilled with the outcome (except I think I would prefer a matt finish on the upper cabinets). Looking forward to your remarks and comments. Thanks for reading and Happy Painting!
Closing Day and final walk through!
Wall to wall carpeting throughout! UGGGHH
Plain Jane home with NO updates. Like working with a blank canvas!
Ugly pinkish linoleum in the bathroom and kitchen.
Bought a Miter Box and framed in the windows.
In the end, it all worked out! I choose black as my accent color and they are perfect. No scratching, strong surface - NO MORE PINK! Except the countertops - which is my next project. Found Granite Countertops for 24.99 Sq, Ft. Installed!

I, like you, have laminate cabinets. I feel these and cockroaches will survive the end of the world!!! Mine were a very dark faux wood tone. DH wont replace because, " they are in excellent shape"!! :-) 17 years ago, way before the trend took hold, I painted those cabinets white. I have never looked back and I love my cabinets......enjoy your work, looks beautiful!!!!

Hi Shirley, thanks for your comments. I especially feel the same way about laminate, cockroaches, and the end... LOL. Was wondering what you used on your cabinets when you painted them white... and did they ever scratch up???
