How can I get inbedded dirt and grimey set in dirt out of carpet ?

We are renting a Apartment and our carpet is filthy dirty, is there a easy way to clean it without a Carpet Cleaner, because i dont own one, and the landlord wont clean it they are to cheap to clean it? Please Help me figure this out? Thank-You!

I bought a bottle at Home Depot for about $8. I did some on line research & found it to be a great choice. I had tried expensi dry shampoo from bed bath & beyond that didn't touch the dirt stains on the stairs. Folex took all the dirt stains out. i did have to clean them twice but they look really good now. I also used it on a red Samsonite piece of luggage & it cleaned up really well!
Comes in a spray. I don't know if it gets out pet stains... all I have is a husband.
