A yearly New Year’s tradition at our house is to plant a new amaryllis bulb. Growing amaryllis is so much fun to watch, with their rapid growth, as though they are on steroids. The growth of the bulb from beginning to bloom takes us nicely through the dreary months of January and February. For indoor plants, not much beats a blooming amaryllis. Amaryllis in bloom. Definitely worth the little bit of effort it takes to grow.
I usually buy the kit, it's easy and you have everything you need.
The amaryllis bulb is very large.

You need to be cruel to them to get reblooming. After they've finished flowering and start to shrivel just stop watering them entirely until late in the summer. The need this to ripen the bulb. I've got a few seedlings started and they need that too, so I'm keeping a close eye on them as they dry out on the kitchen windowsill. I'm thinking of setting up my grow light and starting to water them again as they're so tiny. It's a project!
  • Thanks for such great advice! Maybe there is hope for mine yet:)
