How To Create An Organization Sanctuary

Post sponsored by Comet

We all crave mental clarity and creating that de-cluttered headspace starts at home. “Landing areas” like the home office, bathroom cabinets, or refrigerator door can certainly be tough to keep consistently clutter-free no doubt about that!- but you don’t need a bunch of plastic containers or excessive industrial command strips to keep those areas tidy.

Now, we get it. Nobody wants to spend all their time cleaning the house. Which is probably why so many of us end up haphazardly stuffing a basement shelf with old rags and tossing too many bottles of cleaning products under our sinks. Out of sight out of mind, right? Wrong. Because like it or not, you have to visit those places again and again. And it’s not exactly a zen experience.

Creating a space that inspires you and that you genuinely like being in is a big key to sticking to your clean, clutter-free goals. That’s how we came up with the solution of creating an “Organization Sanctuary”; a “one-stop-shop” for anything you might need to maintain your clutter-free home (and your peace of mind!).

First, select the best space in your home for your cleaning command center. Open shelving allows you to see everything available to you. And don’t be shy; decorate the space! Use calming colors and perhaps even an inspirational quote to help get you motivated.

Instead of tossing your cleaning products haphazardly on a shelf, arrange them in an easily accessible cleaning kit that you can easily take with you anywhere in the house (and check out our post on the best bathroom storage hacks!). Another tip: get rid of excess products that you don’t need, and pick just a few stand-out products that work anywhere in the house. For example, instead of having four or five cleaning products for all the different appliances in your kitchen and bathroom, swap them out for one product like Comet powder that can handle cleaning all those surfaces. That way, you get rid of clutter while also cutting down on your cleaning!

Trade those personality-free plastic bins for natural, rustic crates or fabric drawer organizers with a pop of color. Use labels to clearly mark what goes where; it makes finding what you need so much easier and faster. “A place for everything and everything in its place!”

It certainly doesn’t have to be perfect, but it can be helpful to place similar products and supplies in the same general area. For example, we kept bath linens close to the bathroom cleaning products. Those cleaning products can also be used for the kitchen and so kitchen supplies were in the next bin over. Office supplies all live together on a rolling cart under a wall-hanging mail organizer. And to-do lists hang in fun colors right at eye level where you’re sure to see it!

The most important thing is that you create a calming space that you don’t mind coming back to each day. When you’re in a space that you enjoy, you tend to take better care of it. And when everything is clearly labeled and so well organized in the first place, you’ll find you naturally return things to their place. It really is a sanctuary!

This is about as nerdy as it gets for type A's. Love it.

In my house each bathroom has its own supply of extra toilet paper.....easily accessible from the toilet! All the calming colours in the world are not going to help much when you're stuck you know where without the supplies at hand! Lol!
