I don’t know about you, but in my home, we’re always tripping over each other’s shoes! And it’s a constant fight to keep the coats hung up -- or to remember to hang them up at all :(

Teach people in your house to put shoes, sneakers in their rooms. They get dressed there, that is where everything of theirs should be.

We have always have a shoe rack in the main entrance area of our house. We use this kit now and I love it because I can change it as our need dictates. I bought some decorator baskets and use a couple of them on the top racks for hats and gloves, dog leashes, etc. We took some old barn wood and cool hooks we painted with rubbed bronze spray paint since that matched the shoe rack and made a long coat rack that hangs above the entire length of the shoe rack. It's attractive enough to be in a public area of our house and accommodates all of our stuff and that of guests. I've seen people craft similar shoe racks from used pallet wood. If you had no room for that I would get an over the door shoe holder to put on the back of that coat closet door and label slots with names so people keep extra shoes in their room.

We have hooks up in entryway for coats/ backpacks to hang from. I modified a kitchen cupboard that was above frig that had never been used since we have lived here(3 yrs.). Took cupboard off wall , painted it , put 2 dividers in it evenly spaced apart to put our 2 kids hats, scarves & mittens in . Now they are not all crammed into a little basket. Much better. Here is a picture of cupboard.

How about crates ...put wheels on the bottom and you can roll them in and out of the closet or you can stack them on there sides

Try laying a sturdy bookshelf on its side, tack foam & fabric on the top side to make a seat (a place to put on your shoes)- then, make dividers in each shelf & the shoes go into the small cubbies--one set/cubbie. Also, hang a shoe horn on the end of the upended bookshelf--if you make an outline of a shoehorn or paint a label with a big arrow & the words "SHOEHORN" it should be there when needed.
