Bird house made from old ceiling fan miniature lamp shades. Great idea for inviting feathered friends to your home.
I took 2 glass lamp shades that I had from an old broken ceiling fan. The shades have to have the flat edges so that they can be glued together securely. I sprayed the shades with a primer first. The primer did not adhere too good since I was spraying glass. I waited for the primer to dry, then I sprayed the shades with a flat black paint. I had to do multiple coats since the paint was not adhearing to the glass. The more coats I applied, the better the coverage became.
Once the paint dried completely, I put a heavy string through each side, I tied a knot which stuck out enough to let the shades meet. I glued the knot and string so they would not move and then glued the 2 glass shade pieces together with a glue gun. Once glued together, I still had a gap between them. I used the glue gun to fill in the gap all the way around. Once glue dried, I used a razor to trim off the excess glue, then sprayed the seam with the black paint. I added a leafy decoration on top, sanded the sharp edges on the opening so the birds would not be injured. It was ready to hang. I see that I already have a "resident" too. Lol
Suggested materials:
  • 2 glass shades with flat ends, glue gun, paint, heavy string and decorations of your choice   (Shades were from an old broken ceiling fan)
  • DO NOT SPRAY INSIDES OF SHADES. IT WOULD BE TOXIC TO YOUR FEATHERED FRIENDS.   (Glue cost roughly 5.00 for package)

A lady purchased 3 of these from me. She purchased one, then came back for two more. She brought the first one back with her to show me what she did....She placed potting soil in it, then put a Spider Plant into each end. It was gorgeous. She told me she was making two more for friends who fell in love with it, and I could see why. SO, this can be used for MORE then just a bird house.
