I am getting snails in my planters and wanted to know if anyone knows how to get rid of them without chemicals??? I'm worried about my cats and dog getting a hold of the chemicals that kill the snails from the store. Please help and thank you.

I'm curious to know as well. They really come out of the woodwork after it rains.

My grandma used to sprinkle crushed egg shells around her plants for this reason - I don't know for sure if it worked, but she swore that it did!

You can trap them in beer - use something like a tuna can. Or use Diatomaceous Earth products used for slugs.

should mention that you can sink the tin so the top is level with the soil makes it easier for them to get into the beer and they die happy.

The egg shells work. I use them around my Hostas too. They don't like to go across the shells b/c the sharp shells cut them. I have heard that nut shells work too but have never tried them.

Pie plate, bowl filled with beer placed in the ground level with the soil. The yeast attracts them, they drink their fill and die. THEY ARE LUSHES

Salt will actually melt them! Epsom salts are good for the soil around plants, but I've never tried it for slugs.......might be a two in one thing!

Salt and moth balls. Moth balls will detour anything from mice to deer.

Take a small water bottle and cut off top where in turns in and remove cap. Invert and insert the top neck into the bottom and staple together. You could also duct tape around the cut edges. Put in some beer and put the bottle in the ground so that the a cut edge is slightly below the dirt. Slugs get in but can't get out. If it rains, you don't have to replace the beer. After a week or so, check that there is still beer in the bottle. If rabbits are a problem, human hair repels them.

Hi Gail, it might sound silly but we have a few overturned flowerpots, with a stone placed under the rim to lift them up a bit, scattered around our garden. We check them every few days for snails. They like crawling inside. Grapefruit and orange halves work too. We also try watering our garden in the morning instead of the evening. Snails and slugs like moist conditions so by watering in the morning it gives the surface soil time to dry out by the evening when snails are most active.
