How to Make T-Shirt Yarn

Old T-shirts can be turned into yarn for making knit or crochet rugs. A great zero-waste project!

Cut off bottom band

Cut under the armhole or sleeve

After you cut off the top, save it for making pot holder loops!

Fold the shirt about 1" shy of in half

Cut 1" strips. Cut through the first fold, and end your cut about 3/4" from the top fold.

Cut on an angle

At the top of the fabric, start cutting each strip on an angle.

Stretch the strip and it will curl up!

Before rolling into a ball, gently stretch the entire length of the T-shirt strip. Most fabrics will curl up on themselves. If they don't, the yarn is still perfectly usable for rug making - but you may need to cut narrower strips.

Roll the yarn into a ball

Roll the resulting yarn into a ball, and you are ready to knit or crochet a rug! I find US size 15 needles work the best for this yarn weight.

I love your t-shirt-to-yarn project the best because you show how to do that cut to make one LONG, knot-less strand from each shirt! Next time I see a 2 for $1 shirt sale, I'm going for it!
