Does anyone know if you can paint polywood outdoor furniture?

We have some older brown polywood chairs we would like to use on our new porch. They are in okay shape and would be expensive to replace, but now the color isn't right. Any ideas on if painting is a possibility an if so, step by step instructions? Thank you!

Over 90% of POLYWOOD plastic lumber is made from HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) post industrial material or post-consumer bottle waste, such as detergent and milk bottles. You have a couple options when it comes to painting polywood. You can spray paint it with a spray paint formulated for plastic. OR, polywood can be primed with Zinsser 123 ... water-based primer designed to cling to vinyl, aluminum, and galvanized metal. Then you can paint with an exterior paint. Applying a paint and primer-in-one will not work on your surface. These surfaces are designed to repel and even though you'll be able to create a coating, paint and primer-in-one has been shown to scratch and/or peel off of plastic or "poly" coatings without a primer as a base coat. Before you do any painting, it will need to be thoroughly cleaned and dry.

Spray paint for plastic should do the trick. But as William pointed out, make sure the furniture is thoroughly cleaned and dry before you start. Good luck!

I painted my polywood chairs last spring and now they are peeling? Can I repair them? What do I do?

  • Spray paint that is for multi-surfaces. Be sure to clean them well first.
