DIY Chess Board by Wood Burning

My husband has recently taken up wood burning as a hobby. He has made some really cool projects! He also loves to play chess. We have been using a flimsy store bought board and he was getting tired of it. We looked online for a better quality board but could not find one that we wanted to spend the money on. So he came up with the idea to wood burn it. He had a lot of fun with this project!

Cut or find a square piece of wood. We bought ours at Hobby Lobby for $8 on sale. It is about 11 3/4" square.

Then he measured it off to get as equal as possible rows. This was a little difficult, but the first row ended up being about 1 7/16" and then the rest were about 1 1/2" You can't tell just by looking at it. I guess it's better to get a perfect number square board like 12x12.

Carefully use a ruler and measure the squares off. You need an 8x8 square board.

This is the tool set we used. Purchased at Michaels. It's normally $30.00... but with a 50% off coupon we paid around $15. ;)

But with our 50% off coupon we paid

He had broken an old wood burning tool and was using just the flat stem of it and he got this really cool effect on the squares.

It didn't take long at all to finish! We used pieces from an old game. I told him now he just needs to learn how to whittle and he can make us wooden pieces. :)

We have already played one game! Make this today for some good family fun in the winter!

Did he apply any stain or finish to the whole board after burning?
