DIY Industrial Style 'Pegboard'

I've been setting up a crafting space for myself and needed someway to store items like my rotary cutter, rulers and my cutting mat. I love the functionality of pegboards but I hate the look of them so I made my own version with 1/2" x 1/2" Hardware cloth.

I started by staining and sealing 2 - 12" x 4' Pine shelves. I then joined them using mending straps.
To fasten the mesh to my wood backing, I screwed through a washer, mesh, washer, bolt (as a spacer) washer. The mesh is sandwiched between two washers so the screw head doesn't slip through.
I used two eyebolts and some heavy industrial looking hooks to hang my 'pegboard'.
Suggested materials:
  • 1/2" Hardware Cloth   (Hardware Store)
  • Pine shelves   (Hardware Store)
  • Screws, Washers & Mending plates   (Hardware Store)

Such a cool idea! Do you have to keep to lighter objects to avoid sagging?

What gauge wire have people used and what's the heaviest thing you've hung up? I'm thinking about tools. Thank you. I love how these ideas spawn more ideas!

Such a good idea! I'm thinking about making a wood frame, sandwiching the hardware cloth between two layers of 1x. The standoff would be provided and I'm fine with the wall showing. Thanks.
