DIY Hand Painted Planter Boxes

We don't have a lot of room on our front porch, but we wanted something to add a little color out there, so we built these wooden planter boxes and added some hand painted ravens to make them a little more interesting.
We used a slightly modified plan from Ana White's site to build the boxes; it's a very simple design: just planks of wood with square boards on each corner, and we Kreg jigged the whole thing together. We've used Ana White's plans for a number of projects (like this corner shelf in our den) and had great luck almost every time.
After I painted the finished boxes gray, I went with a simple raven outline for the embellishment. I just googled some simple outlines and freehanded one I liked, then traced around it on the boxes and painted them a darker gray.
Any design would work, of course. We finished these close to Halloween and wanted a fall look for them. They went along with the Edgar Allan Poe themed Halloween we had going on that year. A stencil would work great as well if you're not comfortable sketching by hand.
We stuck some mums in the boxes and they died straight away, as plants tend to do when I'm involved ;). But we put boxwoods in them after that and much more success. It's not a covered porch, as you can see, but they've been out there for a few years now and are still holding up very well.
