I found that after a while fabric softener is the culprit. Cut way back on it. Think I read someplace to soak then wash them using baking soda.

If you have a dryer - try these wool dryer balls instead of fabric softener. I use a little dab of essential oil on them - I use two at a time. Love them - everything comes out smelling great, no static, and soft! https://www.amazon.com/Beautys-Softener-Hypoallergenic-Non-Toxic-Purchase/dp/B01GDUJBAK/ref=pd_lpo_121_tr_t_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=DE0F5A2BMR7V9KCS9BZC

I got this from the Turkish Towel website:

    • Cut back on detergent. Towels feel stiff because they start to build up soapy residue. ...
    • Wash in warm water. ...
    • Replace fabric softeners with vinegar. ...
    • Use baking soda. ...
    • Lighten your load. ...
    • Toss in a tennis ball or dryer ball. ...

Go easy on the tumble drying.

I also started using less detergent, I use Odoban (an anti-bacterial/anti-viracidal) to supplement for cleanliness. I love tennis balls for fluffy everything. You know you family best, so these are just my suggestions.

Are you hanging your clothing and towels outside on a clothesline or inside ( I hang my stuff on hangers and I have an extra shower curtain rod in the shower cuz I don't have a dryer and live in an apartment Bldg.) To keep your laundry from being stiff and scratchy is have a good breeze or windy day for outside and for inside drying put a fan blowing on it cuz if laundry is moving it will be softer and dry faster....if outside the sunshine is a natural bleach for whitening. Hope this helps when you don't have a dryer.. .my mom made me hang clothes outside in snowstorms...the clothes would freeze before I finished but they dried a little (freeze dried) then we would leave out a few hours then bring in and drape over chairs and furniture around the heater then by morning the clothes would be dry. Stiff but dry!; )

The best is a tumble dryer. If you do not have one, once it's dry, put them in a bag with tennis balls, and massages them until it's soft and supple. You can also use a public laundry with tumble dryer.

Dissolve 2 tablespoons Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda in HOT water along with detergent. Add wash cloths and towels. Stop using fabric softner. It coats the towel leaving them less absorbent.

To freshen towels: Wash in hot water, detergent and 1/2 c. Ammonia. (For a large load) I use generic lemon scented and after drying my towels are soft and smell fresh. Ammonia stinks but it doesn't hurt the fabric. I have also used Dish soap and ammonia to take rust out of a silky shirt and it never hurt the fabric. I also use it on my husbands grimy t-shirts. Brightens colored fabrics also. Use less detergent also because the ammonia makes detergent lather up more.
