I have washed comforters before in the washer on a gentle cycle,my only issue was the filling bunched up . Just be careful they are not to heavy for the machine.Add dry them outside if possible

Chances are you will ruin the comforters by washing, not to mention you may end up with the load being too large for your machine. Save a few dollars here and there until you can afford to dry clean them, or think about what you have hanging around the house that you can sell to get a bit of extra cash (been there, had to do that).

  • Luckily I have a tub big enough to do a king sized comforter, BUT, I would hesitate ruining beautiful, expensive comforters. Personally I have not purchased anything dry cleanable or make anything that isn't wasable. I have a bunch of pets and things need to be cleaned more often. My only exception is my living room drapes, only 5 panels and those I send out about 3 times a year. Save your big pennies and get them cleaned one at a time.

Thanks for the tip Naomie, I just have a apartment sized washer&dryer so i think i will not wash them in my washer and take a chance of breaking my new washer? Someone just went and bought us a brand new washer& dryer and we didn't even know the guy? Someone give us the comforters and we didn't know they had to be dry cleaned until we looked at the instructions on the tag? So when i come up with some money i will take them and get them dry cleaned.

There are products for doing your dry cleaning at home. I know I have used them on some of my woolen items. They are used in the washer. You might have to go to a laundromat to get a machine large enough for your comforters but this might help.

what type of fill do you have in the comforter? down or poly fill? i wash my feathers comforters with a down wash used on coats, low heat and 3 tennis ball in the dryer.. the fiber fill ones get washed in an industrial sized machine at a laundry mat and line dried. wash in cold water, add vinegar to help set the dye

You can try it, but they might be ruined in the long run. Make sure your washer is heavy duty or as Dfm said use an industrial laundromat machine. I have made a firm rule...buy NOTHING that needs to be dry cleaned. Some laundromats now have dry cleaning equipment as well.
