OK, I'm looking for an outside- the- box idea...

Here's the situation. He have a lake lot, out in the country. We have a pavilion that's enclosed on 2 sides, and a metal roof over it.

Currently, there's food prep area, with a couple of shelves, attached to one of the enclosed sides. It's very rustic...which is fine. Seeing as it's semi exposed to weather, animals, etc.

My husband is considering tearing it out, and rebuilding it, since it's old, and kind of 'yuck'. I'm wondering if there's an easier or more creative way to go about this... One idea I had was to use a kitchen sink base cabinet, and put a countertop over the whole thing. But not anything TOO fancy, seeing as it'll still be exposed to the elements.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

What about something made with pallets....there are a lot of ideas out there for pallet bars and shelves and tables. It would be rustic and if you want to update and start over you could use the wood for other things

I like the pallet idea. I'll look up pallet furniture and see if anything looks like something my husband would like to do. Thanks!

    thanks Janet!

  • I love the idea of a concrete counter top. You won't have to worry about weather. There are lots of ideas out there for that. You can do it yourself too. Check out Pinterest or Google.

Perhaps you could raise it on a free standing wooden platform. I'm thinking g either the gazebo type or the ones that people make when building a permanent yurt. A deck! Thats the word! Then maybe add a curtain or screen curtain or two to soften the structure and film it with outdoor furniture, meant for relaxing , reading, sleeping or listening to music

Thanks Marwal9, but looking back at what I wrote, I didn't make myself as clear as I should've. The overall pavilion, we're keeping it as it is mostly. My question was in regards to the food prep area.

All those lovely things you suggested...the outdoor furniture, relaxing, reading, etc....we already do. Thank you for taking the time to reply though. I really appreciate it.

It sounds like your husband is good with the tools; how about using sealed cinder blocks (keeping it more sanitary from food borne yucky stuff, and possible mold. Use the pallet boards to create the prep top, sealing it as well. If you want to go really rustic, use sections of trees that have the bark stripped off. You could seal them after they have dried for a season, even with a type of wax to preserve them.

Hmmm. I like the idea of the cinder blocks. Can you buy the cinder blocks sealed, or is it something we would have to do? And if we go that route, what do we seal with?
