How to Build Board and Batten Shutters

I have wanted to build new shutters for a couple of years. I finally talked my husband into “helping” me and I love them. Usually I am his helper when it comes to wood work, the usual holding and handing assistant but for this one I used all the power tools as much as possible. One of my 2014 goals is to build more projects myself and so I wanted my first post of this new year to be a wood working project.
One thing we decided to do when building the new shutters was to only add them back to the single windows. I always thought having shutters on windows that were double and triple wide looked odd. The reason for this...in times when working shutters were really used they were intended to cover the actual window.
Finished Board and Batten shutters
Pre Drill holes before securing to brick.
Finished shutters
Kreg Jig pocket hole
Power miter saw used to cut boards
Shellac Base primer seals wood knots so no bleed through.
Batten for measured 16 inches from top and bottom of boards.

I love the shutters...we bought a foreclosure (YAY!) & just about finished with two of the three floors. We hope to start a new porch addition next Spring & I think your shutters will look PERFECT! Thanks for sharing!
