First and foremost - go in and donate everything that you'll never use! My grandma has a great system - she bought plastic bins and labeled them to organize everything. I'll ask her for a pic :)
Use a marking pen and write the date you purchase the product in a conspicuous place.
Keep like product together.. If you need to, label the edge of the shelf... Soups, veggies (canned of course), fruits, cereals, pastas, rices, potatoes, salad dressings, condiments,
Rotate your stock..when you get down to 1 or 2of an item, put it on your shopping list, when you put it away, write the date on it and put it behind the ones you still have.
my husband calls me 'anal', 'obsessed, etc., but I don't waste $ on stuff we don't need, and it stays to the front of the row, shelf, drawer, etc. so nothing ( hardly ever anyway )goes too far out of date --
Agree about donating unused/unwanted items. Sort by category -- fruits, veggies, soups, etc. -- then by color: yellow corn together, green spinach, etc. I use plastic baskets and plastic shoe boxes from the dollar store to hold envelopes of dried mixes (in alpha order -- cornbread, gravy, meatloaf, etc.), cookies, snacks. My pantry is a 6' bookcase. The top shelf is for "extras" because I hate to run out of stuff; second shelf is soups and veggies; third shelf is fruits, tomatoes and related, and canned meats; fourth shelf is dried (boxed pasta, instant potatoes, etc.), teas, assorted crackers; fifth shelf is cereals, syrups, the basket of envelope mixes, the box containing cookies, cocoa mix, popcorn. The space above the first shelf has a basket for jello and puddings, and other "extras".
I also have another bookcase for trash bags, plastic wrap, etc., rags, a few glass jars for storage, pet food and treats, etc. These bookcases are a part of my utility room which is fortunately very close to my kitchen. I have used this system for decades and my daughter also uses it. Makes it very convenient when we visit each other's kitchen! Hope this helps.
I found freezer baskets at a yard sale and bought them. I use one for small package mixes(gravy, taco, jello) etc. I use another for plastic utensils and small picnic items. The are great and see-through also. I store less used items up high out of the way to have lower shelving that is easy to reach. A few times a year I get the small ladder out to get bigger pieces to use. I have a small utility sink in my pantry. Very useful for rinsing dusty pieces stored on top shelves.
