This is the wall that faces the kitchen as you walk in the back door

I'd paint the background of the square, indented section a different color than your walls.

Inside, I'd hang chunky, dark wood shelves and then decorate those with special and unique plates that you can sit on those shelves. Add some greenery and a few other accessories, and this would look great.

I'd remove the bulletin board or corkboard on the right and let that dedicated area be the focal point.

If you want it to be a focal point you could paint the back a different color and add a few floating shelves to display items. You could add trim to the outside to beef it up a little. Shutters?

If you are going to put all of those photos back up, maybe paint all of the frames the same color?

I would get rid of all of the small pictures and put up a large framed picture or a framed mirror. Or... I would buy mirror tiles and glue those up in the small indentation you have, then put up just 1 shelf and put items on the shelf that will reflect beauty back out. The framed mirror, or mirror tiles, will reflect light from the room it's facing, bring light to this area.

Take a picture that you already have down off of the wall, and hold it up in that spot. If you like the idea of a new picture or one you have now, then think about if you would like a pair of sconces... one on each side of the picture. I wish I could send you pictures of my house... Every wall has a picture, or 2 or 3, and shelves and sconces. My favorite wall has a huge mirror, a huge picture, 3 sconces between the mirror and picture, and then below the sconces, I hung my 100+ year old viola that I played in orchestra. (viola is a tad bit smaller than a violin and has 1 string that is lower in sound than a violin) If you have musical instruments, they can be hung with musical notes made out of wood or just about anything. Experiment... walk thru your house and look at what you have on your walls now... pick them up and hold them in that spot to get an idea of all of the things that you could hang there. I'm a fan of angels and have 9 of them... 3 each on 3 different shelves. What ever you do do, please let me know... with a picture!

Hi Bonnie! Without seeing the adjacent kitchen, it is difficult to know exactly what style you like. But I do notice that you have some light oak chairs in front of the wall, so you could work with those. I would frame out the entire nook (so it looks like a framed painting), then paint the back wall with a color that co-ordinates with the kitchen or dining room accents. If you don't have a preferential color, then graphite chalkboard paint (or just black) will give you a dramatic effect and lots of contrast. Add three shelves in the same lighter wood color as the chairs, then decorate with your framed prints and accent pieces. Try to have all of the frames somewhat matching- they can be different sizes and shapes, but should be one cohesive color.

Hi, I love the space and would probably paint the entire area a bold color (because I love color) but must compliment the rest of the room and I would add mirror tiles to the inset ,making the room appear larger and you could still add shelving.

I took the mirrors out because it mirrored my kitchen and I don't always get my dishes washed

I would fill the inside completely with a mirror. Add the grates to make it look like it has window panes. Then I would put slightly rustic looking shutters on each side. Above I would place an ornate iron flat decorative piece and underneath I would put a narrow table up flat against the wall.

I would paint with accent colour then hang a large piece of Art. Maybe a sun burst metal work or a large painting with the colours of your kitchen. If you have children you could use their hand prints on a canvas to paint a wreath. Underneath you could place their photos in a row.

Remove the shelving and paint the niche a value slightly darker than the wall.

Hang a Palladian (half circle) faux wall trim above. Place a tall vase or larger painting inside the new niche.

MAKE A GIANT CHALKBOARD WIITH A CLASSY FRAME AND A FEW PAINTED DESIGNS OR STENCILED FLEUR DE LIS ON THE CORNERS AND USE AS INSERT. OR PUT ONE ON A HINGE AND USE BEHIND IT FOR SPICE COLLECTION OR A SECRET HIDING PLACE OR STORAGE? I ALWAYS WANTED A WALL LIKE THAT...

  • Lori Lori on Apr 06, 2017

Since it faces the kitchen, is it in the kitchen itself? If so, I'd paint that niche a nice shade of your favorite color, add some shelves, and put canning jars holding stuff like sugar, flour, coffee, noodles, rice, etc. on them. I use my antique jars to hold that stuff so it's not only decorative, but also useful. (storing and showing off two things in the same space)

I would put some complementary wallpaper border (black and mello yellow, as it appears that the paint color is a mello yellow), across the top of the wall. Then I would put some type of frame or border around the, sort of window box, whatever that inlet is called. Then I would place a mirrow inside this part of the wall, paint the shelf black and glue it back into place. Then I would add some more attractive wreaths, pics, sconces or anything that would add more appeal to this wanna be pretty wall!:). Good Luck and have fun prettying your wall!:)

I would take down all that is there, put a table or chest there and a large picture or mirror. Put things on the table that relates to the kitchen both large and small. Maybe a large glass cake plate with lid or even a large rooster or ceramic piece.
