Usually after the last frost date for your growing zone. Upper Michigan is zone16 and their date is June 11-20. Lower Michigan is zone 13 and their date is May 11-20. Hope this helps a little! This is when hummers usually show. Here in TN, it is after April 1.

I always just wait til I see them flying outside my windows. They come back every spring and know we feed them. If you're a first tie feeder it helps to put something red on the window( I've used window clings before), they'll be attracted to it, and then youll know they're there.

I put them out early May for the "early bird"! haha! I live in the Chicago suburb area of St. Charles, IL. Due to our strange winters lately, I have seen them mid-late May.

I also create my own syrup because it is cheaper.....1 cup sugar to 4 cups water. Boil, cool and refill every 2-3 days. Keep your feeders CLEAN from mold and FRESH syrup and you will have a summer of these amazing birds!

Be patient because each year seems to vary with the arrival time. Enjoy the view.

Try www.learner.org. It is a migration map I have used for many years. It used to be called The Journey North. Just click on the hummingbird section and a map of the USA will come up, and people track their sightings so you know when to expect them in your area. So far people have reported seeing them as far north as West Virginia and TN. I'm in Michigan and am expecting to put out my feeders early May, but will keep my eyes on the map!! Hope this helps.
