We have a beautiful tree, facing the canal in our back yard. Jet skis and boats go by all day long and although eventually we will build a dock, pergola, fire pit area, etc. it will be quite some time, before we will have the money for that type of project. I kept seeing these pallet swings, while trying to figure out what to do next with my pallet collection. My husband was growing tired of the stack in our garage and pressure was ON to either use them, or say goodbye and pass them on to someone else! I just couldn't stand the thought of handing them over, as I worked so hard to find "good ones"!! Soooo... out came the tools, a little planning and the result turned out to be possibly one of my most favorite spots around our house!!!

So relaxing!

Using the largest pallet I had, with the most boards in tact, I measured out the length of a twin size mattress. I knew I wanted to be able to lay down, stretch out and spend hours relaxing with the water and the wind...

Cut pallet #1 and #2 and joined together

We bought our house in August and I had not been in the pool. Thanks to this project and some clumsiness, I met the pool fully dressed! Fortunately my phone survived!

After joining

Ran 2x4s all the way through to add support. Screwed them in and started adding sides and hardware to hang from tree.

Back and sides added

For support and a place to lean pillows.

Finished!

Found a used plush mattress on Craigslist. Covered with two water proof mattress pads and purchased twin sheet set from target. Found pillows at "faith farm" (used furniture, household, etc) and pulled out our sewing machine for final touches.

What happens if it gets caught in a summer shower? You aren't home for... say over the weekend... do you have to take everything inside before you leave to keep it dry? Or can it get wet?

Yes, Cathy! lol fortunlately we don't have little kids! This will be "fixed and finished" soon. A couple of others made similar comments/asked questions regarding this: the "sticks" went on after it was hanging and we put the mattress on. Originally, it was measured for a "regular" size twin mattress. When I found this PLUSH mattress, I had to have it- my husband said it wouldn't work because of the sides and back- that was all i needed to hear and I made it work!!! Lol!!! He was right... in a sense. It didn't work- but I found a temporary way to have the thick mattress and still have a way to prop up the pillows. We will get to it soon.
