Clean up the vomit and then use a wet rag to remove as much liquid as possible. Pour a thin coating of baking soda over the area to absorb the liquid and odor. You can also work the baking soda into the carpet by hand.

Now mix 50/50 white vinegar and warm water together in a spray bottle and spray the baking soda. The vinegar and baking soda will interact to help loosen particles and stains.

Let the area dry. Then rinse with a cloth and warm water. Let that dry then vacuum the area.

Vinegar is a disinfectant, it has antibacterial properties and removes many household odors.

Vinegar works well on most surfaces. I would start with a 50-50 mix with warm water and test a hidden spot if you are worried about colorfastness.

do test for color fastness... don't ask me how i know. I've had better luck if i leave the the mess alone and let it dry out in place. when dry, i take a junk shop fork and scrape/ loosen the the particles and then vacuum. then spray with an enzyme based cleaner made for pet messes. my Freddy cat has an allergy to certain brands of dry food- lots of vomit before i found the right brand and type of food.

t's a prescription diet- i have to order it from a vet. it's called "hills prescription diet skin/food sensitivities d/d venison and green pea formula" it comes in a dry food and a wet food.. it has a feeding guide printed on the bag. now I've heard people rag about hill's cat food stating that it leads to liver disease, I've always wondered how old their pets were...depending on the breeding and care- Siamese bred cats tend to live longer 18-20 yrs if no health issues, taken in strays / farm kittens 8-9 years. born in the house, raised in the house - 10 to 12 yrs. that's just my experience.

I tend to use dish washing liquid already diluted. First pick up all the vomit you can with paper towels. Then I soak the area with the dish washing liquid / water solution and I work that in with an old towel / flannel. Then I get a fresh towel and press down firmly to remove as much of the water as possible. Nothing is never fail especially if you don't get there quick enough. But with 3 cats I have had quite a bit of experience.

The one I use is Stainmaster Pet Stain Remover. My oldest cat is part Siamese with long hair. He sometimes will eat the dog food and then upchuck.

The coloring and smell are horrible. The Stainmaster not only cleans up the area very well plus removes the smell completely. The rental unit we had before we bought our home was cheap. Any stain wouldn't come out. Mikey ate something orange then upchucked and it stained the carpet. I wish I had this one that cheap carpet! I lost my pet deposit because of the stain. Good luck.

My dear husband bought me A Little Green Machine for Christmas. I use it for the small spots. It is handy as it uses regular carpet cleaning solution and removes the water like a big carpet shampooer. I really like this as it doesn't leave a much residue in the carpet to draw the pet to the same spot again.
