Jumbo Zipper Easter Eggs

If you want to fill your Easter baskets with bigger items than jelly beans, you are going to need big eggs. Large Easter eggs can be expensive, but you can grab some plain jumbo decor eggs from the dollar store and add a zipper to so they can hold all the goodies you want.
I found these chalkboard Easter eggs at Target in their dollar section, but any large hollow egg will work.
Using a bread knife, I carefully sawed the egg in half.
Then I drilled tiny holes with my drill around the edges I just cut. To keep them spaced apart 1/2", I made marks on a scrap piece of wood and lined one hole up with one line, then drilled a second hole on the other line. I continued this all the way around the cut edge on both pieces.
I lined a colorful zipper up with the inside of the cut egg and stitch it to the egg. It was easy to do by going up and down the holes I already drilled with a double thickness of thread and a needle.
Once I got all the way around I repeated it going in between the original sewing so there were no gaps. Then I lined the bottom of the egg up on the other side of the zipper and repeated. You will have to unzip the zipper to sew the second piece on.
Because my eggs were chalkboard eggs, I decorated them with chalk markers and then filled them up. They were perfect for holding a new spring shirt in their Easter basket.
I made one for my daughter too. With pink and purple. And I can use them every year to fill their baskets with extra big goodies. I also made some printable egg shaped boxes to fill with candies in their baskets. And for more Easter fun, check out this round up of last minute Easter Crafts.
