How to Paint a Masculine Blue Dresser

This dresser was more than just a painted dresser, it was a step towards moving on for a gentleman who had lost his other half. His late wife had made their bedroom peach, and with her now gone, he was ready for something a bit more masculine. His daughter actually reached out to me looking for a solid wood dresser to have customized for her father. She decided that this chest on chest tallboy was perfect.
I had acquired this vintage dresser from an old warehouse full of furniture just sitting there waiting to be reloved. It's solid wood, well made and much heavier than it may appear.
Whoever owned this old dresser before it made its way into that old warehouse really took care of it. The drawers had been lined with a protective paper that crumbled when removed leaving the drawers in great shape underneath.
The dresser was sanded, cleaned and prepped before being painted. The first coat was done in Sailor, a true blue, but more on the royal blue side.
Sailor was a bit too little boy blue and not quite masculine blue, so the second coat was darkened with a mix of derby and sailor making a very manly navy blue.
This darker navy is much more appropriate for a man's dresser.
Initially, the original hardware was going to be painted pewter but thanks to D Lawless Hardware, we replaced the original pulls with new hearty pewter pulls.
The dresser has a new masculine finish and now lives in Brooklyn with a man making a fresh start. To see the full makeover and more photos make sure to click over to the blog here

It IS beautifully done. But I cringe when I see a truly vintage solid wood piece like this painted instead of being restored back to it's beautiful natural wood. And doesn't painting it ruin it's value?
