Does corn need a trellis?

I am trying my thumb on a straw garden...and was curious if I need to put a trellis behind the corn or will it stand up on its own when it gets bigger? The trellis in the background is not set up yet for my tomatoes and other vine vegetables.

Unless you live in a place that gets a lot of strong winds, I've never planted with a trellis and done just fine, except for the rodents eating my immature corn cobs.

    • An old saying from a friend of mine "Harvest the corn before the raccoons enjoy it" She always said to plant corn is rows or blocks so that the wind could pollinate it. The stalks are pretty study and don't need support.

I live a few miles from thousands of acres of corn and there are no trellis.

Corn stalks stand erect on their own, but be aware that having just a few corn stalks likely won't produce any ears unless you pollinate by hand. It does make nice tall foliage behind your other plants though!

I agree with all of these comments.

I've never seen corn needing a support of any kind. For fun last Summer, my grandson planted three popcorn kernels (in a patio planter) that had failed to open in the microwave. To everyone's surprise, a 5' cornstalk appeared AND actually produced a few ears of corn! By the way, it had no support and was a single cornstalk. 🙂

Burpee has a "deck" corn that does not grow as tall and it is NOT GMO. It has been bred for growing in pots on your deck

I grew up in the country and corn in the garden or field never needed support. The stalks on the ends of the rows might not pollinate...ummm, wonder about planting it in a circle, with a tomato in the center? The stalks would hold up the tomato plant!

you need at least 4 to 6 rows for corm too make they need too cross pollinate.

corn is often used as a support for runner beans, some squash varieties.. many refer to this as planting 3 sisters- corn bean and squash each will supply nutrition to the other. if you grow small amounts of corn to eat/ornamental, you will need to hand pollinate them.

Beats me but it's a huge area of sugarcane, rice, corn and other crops. Miles and miles. It's the Everglades farming region of South Florida.

Plant a few popcorn kernels and thin out to 3-4 plants. Harvest when silk is brown, peel and microwave 2 cobs at a time and pop pop pop! Fun snack.
