in our yard we just use a mixture of dish detergent and water and put it on the hill in a circle at the base of the hill. This kills and without killing the grass

Uncooked cream of wheat or malt-o-meal sprinkled around the hill so it will be carried into the colony. Once eaten it expands and kills each ant. It works but can take over a week to empty the hill. They don't move, they die.

I use grits and powdered sugar. Really all you need is the grits. I add the powdered sugar just cuz I am a nice person, even to those pests I want to kill. When the ants eat the grits and they take a drink of water, darn stuff expands in their little tummy's and 'ouch' on them. Guess that is why I add the powdered sugar, giving them something sweet makes me feel less of a nasty person. Like the cream of wheat mentioned (I have never tried that but I am sure that will work just as well) it does take a bit of time to get rid of them. Just a bit of advice, use it all over your yard, their hills and in other areas. The reason that I say that is the 'hills' will die away but those who survived will start up another colony. I do my grounds a few times a year. It is cheap and I don't have to worry about pets that are passing by who may wander into my yard. Good Luck!!!!!
