How to Use Tired Kitchen Cabinets in the Playroom

These cabinets have seen better days. They originally hung in our kitchen (!!) and flanked our window. They blocked A LOT of light, so we took them down and replaced them with open shelving and re-hung them in our laundry nook until we could figure out what to do with them. Once we started fixing the studio/laundry room wall and painting the new cabinets in that space, we realized these old ones had to come down.
Then inspiration struck and we figured we could refinish them and rehang them to create a bookshelf type ‘experience’ in the playroom but keep it off the floor.
We pulled off the cabinet faces and sides and re-clad them using pine that we'd ripped down to size. We glued them and then nailed them in place with a brad nailer.
To make them match (and go with the rest of the vibe of the room), we stained the wood with a rustic finish (I've linked to the materials at the bottom!)
Then we re-hung them on top of one another! We made sure to get them into a wall stud for added stability. I used some simple quilting cotton in a punchy pattern to add interest to the backs.
Already they are a fantastic addition to our playroom and they cost next to nothing! Thanks so much for reading along and for more details and photos, please check out our blog post xoxo

I'm having just my cabinet doors and drawer fronts replaced. Any ideas out there what I can do with the old door fronts when they're removed?

Cabinets make great shelving for so many purposes. In fact, I think I'm going to search my local cabinet maker's warehouse for usable storage for my pantry closet. Thanks for the tip.

could put a back, top and feet on it and use it as a buffet/sideboard.
