Can we start with a tongue twister just for fun? Try to say "painted pineapple pedestal table" five times fast :P If not, how about Dog ate your furniture table? That's what this project is mostly about anyway. This table belonged to my customer and had been used as a bit of a chew toy at some point. Aside from the bite marks its a pretty solid table.
This dark pineapple pedestal table aka hospitality table was originally made by Ethan Allen and is rather solid, aside from the chew marks of course. The owner wanted to lighten up the dark finish but we need to address this damage first.
Naughty doggy! Someone get that pup a bone or a chew toy, preferably NOT made of Ethan Allen wood.
The chew damage was addressed and repaired using Magic Mud by Kristi Kuehl Pure Home Paint. This non-toxic filler can be used for minor repairs, filling hardware holes and raised stencils. It can be found here. Magic mud was liberally applied to the damaged area and once dry it was sanded smooth. Another layer of magic mud was then applied, And again, once dry it was sanded smooth yet again until the damaged chew marks are nothing more than a memory. The table was then lightened up and painted in layers of shades of grays. Magic Mud is also listed in the project post which can be found : http://www.justthewoods.com/painted-pineapple-pedestal-table/
The table was then flipped over and the underside painted before the rest was given layers upon layers of grays. After multiple layers of grays were painted the table was distressed and sealed for protection.
Next time your sweet pooch attempts to chomp on your furniture don't rush to think it's destroyed for good. With a little love, your furniture can be saved and enjoyed for years to come. Would the mud stuff work on pressed wood? My puppy chewed my favorite table and it is Sauder pressed wood. The can you stain it? I love what you did.

not that you didn't do a great job but, i'm curious....do your dogs have their own toys for chewing and have they been trained (not just disciplined) to know the difference? my dogs don't destroy my furniture, but they have their own specific basket of assorted chew toys......

What about gel stain? I recently stained my sons' twin and trundle ensemble, also both bathroom cabinets. I absolutely love gel stain..

you can swell the wood with a dampened cloth and an iron. It wil fill in most of the compressed wood and it can be sanded and restained. Little filler is needed that way.

Here's an old chewed hope chest that I redid. I did't use any filler, after a little sanding and some paint, it was done.
