How to Paint Over Laminate
Vintage furniture pieces are a great way to buy quality pieces and same some money. Plus, it gives you the opportunity to customize your furniture and home since you can paint, stain and make them over in so many different ways.
This dresser above was a vintage Thomasville bamboo dresser with a laminate top. It is super sturdy and well made, but the white faux finish laminate needed to go. Once it was properly prepped by cleaning with TSP substitute, sanding, priming and sanding again I was able to paint it with an oil-based satin paint which gave it the perfect shine.
This before photos shows the white top and yellow color on the body of the dresser. The new navy makes the piece look more cohesive. And no one would know by looking at it that there's laminate underneath.

This video above shows the process and steps I take to ensure a long-lasting finish when painting over laminate. Trust me, it's not that hard! I actually follow most of these steps when prepping and painting furniture because it creates a higher quality finish that if I went straight to paint and skipped the prep work. The quality is in the prep!
