Painting an Old Metal Mailbox

Sometimes in a marriage or relationship, we can't always agree on everything. Whether it's what to have for dinner, home decor, or in this case what color mailbox should be on the front of the house. We recently had the vinyl siding replaced on our home due to wind damage. With the new siding, we decided to replace our outdoor lighting as well as our mailbox. Initially, I ordered a new mailbox online but hubby and I decided to return that and paint our existing mailbox.
I think this old metal thing was original to the house, and besides being a bit rusted there was nothing really wrong with it. I mean, it holds mail.
The top of the mailbox had the most rust and well was in crappy condition compared to the rest. I taped up the round handle and started to prep.
I wrapped some sandpaper around a sanding block and sanded away at the rust and the entire surface of the mailbox.
After sanding, the mailbox was wiped clean. YUCK!!
Next, I took the mailbox outside and sprayed with primer. Just in case. Since I never painted a mailbox before I wanted to make sure to cover my bases with prep.
I then painted the mailbox in a pretty bold blue color, sanding between coats. I then sealed with a clear protective sealer. You can find the paint and products used HERE.
But remember I mentioned at the beginning that we don't always agree with our significant other? Well, my hubby wasn't a fan of the blue for the mailbox. Back to the drawing board.
In life, we have to choose our battles, and I decided to let hubby have his way with this one. The mailbox was repainted in a pure black and it looks great, clean and crisp. To see a few more steps in between as well as more photos, and links to products used make sure to hop on over to the blog.

The blue was quite nice. I would have preferred charcoal over the black. Sometimes one needs to give in. Now your ready for a big project and he has to give in
