It is starting to cover nearby plants. Should I wait till the blooms are done? I don`t want to damage it.

Trim it after it blooms. Wherever you cut it, it will shoot out with new growth to cover bare spots. I would feed it too.
All spring flowering shrubs should be prune after they finish blooming.
I would trim it back--really trim it back--in the fall to get it under control. It won't hurt it but it will keep it full and keep it from taking over.
Rhododendrons bloom on old wood so always prune it back after blooming. You can usually cut back one third of the bush with no problem after blooming and then give it a good fertilizing.
