Help! Our maple tree's roots are approaching the lawn...

We have a large (healthy) Maple tree in the center of the front yard. The roots are approaching the surface of the lawn, making it tough to mow and also difficult for the grass to grow properly. I love the tree, but wonder if we should have it removed and plant a smaller variety of tree and/or add a load of top soil to the front yard and cover it with new grass seed.

I too had this problem. Had a aboriculture expert come to examine my tree. Yes, it is 50 yrs old and should be cut down. I love the tree but it could fall down and damage my house. So sad to have to do this and pay much $$ to remove it.
that is what maples do, sounds like a sugar maple, probably drops dead branches a lot too. ours did. what we choose to do at first was put down mulch and flowers. years later we just cut it down.
Unfortunately its best to bite the bullet and get rid of it or live with the problems mentioned above. Suggest willow oak to replace it if they grow where you live or else a red oak. They both grow very fast when they are young trees. Willow oaks have narrow leaves that won't kill your lawn and they pretty much drop all at once. All the other oaks drop large leaves all winter that have to be raked.
