Is it ok to plant around the base of a mature (30+ years) Oak tree?

We would like to plant a raise bed around a large Oak in our backyard. We are considering Hostas and some type of ferns as it is a shady area. We have heard that it is bad for the tree, however, we have seen this done many places. What say the experts at Hometalk?

I would make container gardens around the tree as most likely you face face a lot of roots and it will take nourishment away from the tree.

My son who does landscaping says as long as you leave about 10" around the trunk of the tree uncovered, it will be fine. Never put mulch or any planting up around a trees trunk. Have fun!
