Buy 2-year-old plants from your local garden center. Plan carefully where you want to plant them as they will live to be 20 years old or better if planted and cared for correctly. Plant where they will get at least 6 hours of sun per day. I prefer the Jersey Giant variety as most of the plants that you purchase are males which are preferred over females for harvesting. The females produce seeds but not edible stalks. It is best to plant them in a raised bed as they do not tolerate weeds well. Fertilize them well in January if your climate allows. I'm in zone 7 so this is my schedule to have fresh asparagus to pick in March. You can transplant them from their original location but it's not a great idea.
