How to grow sweet potatoes without them being 1/2 eaten

I planted sweet potatoes last year, tops were beautiful, very excited to dig them, then everyone had been eaten on by something. Anyway to prevent what ever that evil thing is underground that eats my beautiful (they should have been) sweet potatoes.

Most likely it was voles.Try spraying the area with castor oil and apply blood meal.
Plant your sweet potatoes in a potato bag. You can find them in most garden supply catalogs.
dig the holes bigger than you think you need and line with chicken wire. This works for all plants. Just remember to put the wire across the top and completely cover the hole.
