Front of house: I'm looking for an inexpensive solution

When we bought the house, there was nothing in front of the right side, other than some sad nandina and pea gravel. I found 5 tiny evergreens (cypress) that were in quart pots at Kmart for $1.75 each! As you can see from the pictures they have done rather well!!! I did not have enough and did not plan wisely as you can see. The results are 2 very sad nandina on the right of the porch. Add to the fact we ripped up the front yard to redo our drain and now I have 2 nandina that don't really work there. One being half dead. I am trying to avoid having to buy two matching cypress because the price would be insane for the size they are now. I am all about cost effective. Any suggestions for rethinking this section and NOT doing plants but something else between the two cypress?? Or some other type of plant? In another pot perhaps?? HELP! And can cypress be cut back?? They are getting pretty tall.

  • What about a piece of artwork like this under the window:

I actually wondered about a fountain also. Hubby says bite the bullet and buy one more cypress :(

Personally, I would remove all of the plants that are in front of the brick, plant a 3-4 foot flowering shrub below the center of the window, and place identical statuary on both sides of the flowering shrub. The flowering shrub could be blue. In lieu of the statuary, you could plant two boxwood bushes or yellow-flowering perennials.

    Good luck!

Good ideas, labor intensive, but good ideas. I don't think I want that drastic of a change however. Plus I do love the cypress. Very lacy

Cypress may be tiny now but previous homeowner planted one on each corner of my house. When I bought it they were over 30 foot tall and ruining my roof. Did you read the tag on mature height? What was it?
