Is a sun sail possible?
You could build a small screen that you could put up when the sun is too strong and staple in some kind of fabric as screening. That way you wouldn't have to have it up all the time and cover only the area that you need to cover.
An umbrellas is quick, affordable and pretty. I use one for my shallow fish pond to prevent sunburn on the fish and plants.
