How do you start a flower garden after dog does his business?

I wouldn't necessarily remove the dirt but you may want to mix in some peat or good quality top soil before planting things. You might want to start with some smaller areas that are marked off as beds and see what takes, mulching around the plants to give some nutrients and to help with weed control.

Oh for goodness sakes. This always makes my head spin. Just till over the dirt REALLY well and add in bags of good quality soil (Miracle Gro or whatever is sold in your area for the type of plants you wish to place in that spot), to beef up the nutrients in the existing dirt. Then choose plants that will thrive according to your climate. For you, I would just choose not to plant edibles in that section for a season or two until the soil has been amended enough to successfully grow food.

You will need to amend the soil with garden soli not top soil which is for lawns,peatmoss and lime to neutralize the soil.

I had spots in my yard when my daughters dog peed. Using the lime will neutralize the soil. After about a wee, I planted grass seed and it grew well. I agree with using lime.

When can a plant perennials? Is it too late in the season?

Just prepare the area like you would any other area for planting! That said, gardening is a whole lot more enjoyable if you do take the time to amend your soil first. Poor soil like clay that is hard to work will turn gardening into a chore rather than a pleasant pastime.

Where are you from. Here in SE MN we are still getting cold snaps at night just above, at or below 32 degrees with the cold snap we are in right now. It also depends on what you are wanting to plant.

Sorry, computer screwing up. My dogs have used my garden over the winters before and I have had no problem not being able to grow my veggies in it. Should be no different than getting manure from a farmer to amend the soil. Start amending your soil like you would any other, and start your garden when safe to plant in your area.

I'm from upper Delaware near Philly.

I told my boyfriend that it shouldn't be a problem once we neutralize the dirt. He still thinks he gonna grow dog poop and urine up through the roots. His own thinking...lol. I laughed too, because I was raised on a thriving vegetable and fruit farm with plenty of chicken manure. What kind of blanket perennials or perennials period do you suggest?
