    Perennials ferns?

I have never cut back a fern, I let the ferns die back and cover themselves for the winter, then in the spring I remove the old fronds when they show signs of the new fronds breaking ground. Mine get about three feet high each year in the ground. I have not fed them in the three years since we moved into the house and inherited many plants already in place and they are gorgeous being ignored.
