I live in a cold climate with lots of snow but the summers are really warm

You don't say what kind of tree, some do better than others. If you take a cutting, dip in root tone and then in a pot with dirt until you see new growth, you might be surprised. Some plants/trees can be propagated just in a vase of water until they develop roots.
