Consult your local nursery as to what grows in your area, when to plant, what kind of soil you have, watch some YouTube videos, and get busy. You could try container gardening at first. I like to plant perennials that come back every year, and also flowering scrubs like camelias, rhododrendrons, azaleas, peonies, fuschias, butterfly bushes, hydrangeas, and then some bulbs, lilies are a favorite, primroses, lobelia, iceland poppies, and sometimes ground cover along walk, curb like pholx.
Do you want to plant a small area with flowers, or plant small low growing flowers? Or both?
as above start with good rich dirt. How much sunshine does your planting area get? That will also be a consideration. How much rain/water?
Take a look around your neighbor hood...what plantings are where? Do they look healthy? Do you want flowers for just this year or do you want to plants that will come back every year?
check with a master gardener for your area....landscaping with locally grown or native plants is always a good route to go...less maintenance. Container gardens allow you to control your potting medium, and can be relocated to different areas on your property if they do not thrive in the current location.

Start with top soil,potting soil,seeds and seedlings
make sure to start with good soil. If your soul is bad nothing will grow. And your container should have good drainage.
