How to fit a horizontal blind?

I had an odd size window all the blinds were a little to short or to long.

I bought a blind that was a little long and measured an equal length off both ends to make it fit in the opening of the window.

Next I taped it firmly together, the top bar and the blinds together with tape securely around both sides of my measure marks. It then looked similar to a 1" x 4" board and being careful not to cut the cords or inner parts I sawed the ends off.

Next I released the blind slats from the top bar and kept them taped together, now lightly sand the 4 corners of the ends to round them slightly and take off the tape.

They should look like you had the store cut it to order.

Hello Ret and thank you for your response. My son bought this house and the blind is already fitted and hanging on the window, it's just too long but the width fits fine. I'm trying to just shorten it. Seems like these instructions are on how to cut the width. Am I right?

We've shortened many blinds for apartment windows. It's a fussy, but worthwhile task. Leave the blind hanging in place while you work. Under the bottom bar are little plugs where the excess cords are tucked in. Pry off the plugs. Pull the knotted strings out through the holes in the bottom (where you removed the plugs) and undo the knots. Then pull the center string up by the number of slats you need to remove in order to get it to the length you need. The slats will slide out from the sides of "ladder" strings. Replace the bottom bar at the right length. It's better to be slightly too long than a slat too short. Make sure the center strings aren't wrapped around the ladder strings. Rethread the center strings through the top hole and pull each one out through the bottom hole of the bottom bar. (This is the hard part, because the top hole is usually small and the cord frays. A tweezers helps.) Tie a knot in the center string from below. Trim the ladder string, but leave a couple of inches in length to shove them back in the bottom hole. (You'll see how they're tucked in when you take the plug out at the beginning.) Secure with the plugs. Any loose center string can be pulled tight through the top by pulling the individual strings of the pull cord. You may have to readjust the knots on the pull cord to even them out. Hope this helps!

If you want the blind to sit in the window sill, be sure to check that the sill is level from left to right. The correct way to measure for a vertical is to take several measurements from where the top of the blind will hang down to the window sill or floor. Then use the shortest measurement as the length of all your vertical veins. They will hang evenly.
