Does a less messy option exist to banish the old ugly popcorn ceilings?

instead of removing cover it up with bead board or faux metal ceiling tiles.

I was planning to try this too in my 1972 painted popcorn home. Once it's painted it's like stucco. Now I just have to find someone to do the work for me. Let's hope Google pays off with a few choices.

I agree with Heidi! Covering up is easier than removing. Depending on the house style and you taste you can cover with just about anything. Bead board, ship lap, ceiling tiles, wood planks, 1/4" drywall made for the purpose, etc.

I have seen many DIY projects that suggest just covering them with ceiling tiles. I would imagine that you might need to drop the ceiling just a tad and then install whatever is necessary to keep the ceiling tiles in place.
