I'm a big fan of chalkpaint, it works on most surfaces, even fabric!
You can also use rustoleum. Its always best to use a sealer. It helps protect your paint job and adds a longer life.

I prefer chalk paint. I've mixed my own and used rustoleoum as well as Annie Sloan. Love them all. If you decide to go with chalk paint I recommend using a clear poly to protect it. I use water based it's easier to clean up.
As of late I have become a big fan of Mineral paint. It provides wonderful one coat coverage and does not require waxing like chalk paint does.
